A steel bike shelter for your Amsterdam garden or courtyard

Living in Amsterdam means owning at least one bike, and usually several. A covered steel bike shelter in your garden or courtyard keeps them dry and organised and off the pavement. We build them to measure, and we would happily build more.

Why bother with a bike shelter

Most Amsterdam bikes live outside: on the pavement, chained to a bridge or leaning against a wall. If you have a garden, the bikes end up there, but out in the rain. Saddles stay wet, chains rust, and an expensive e-bike or cargo bike (bakfiets) really does not belong in the weather for weeks on end.

A steel shelter with a roof solves that. Bikes stay dry, they have a fixed place, and the rest of the garden stays usable. For a ground-floor flat in Oost or de Pijp with a long back garden it is an easy win, and even a small city garden can gain space with a well-planned shelter.

Made to fit your garden

No two Amsterdam gardens are the same. Long and narrow behind a 1930s house, a corner behind a canal house, or a strip beside a new-build home on IJburg. That is why every shelter is made to measure. We match the length, depth and height to the space and to what needs to go in it: standard bikes, a cargo bike, children’s bikes or a scooter.

We make everything ourselves in our workshops in Urk and Emmeloord, then galvanise and powder coat the steel in any RAL colour. Anthracite and black are discreet choices, and our own canal green (grachtengroen) gives it a local touch. You always get the production drawing, so you know exactly what is coming. More details on our bike shelter page.

The roof is what counts

A good shelter is all about the roof. It keeps off rain and falling leaves. How far it extends and whether the sides are closed depends on the location. Against a fence or wall, one side can stay open. Free-standing in the middle of a garden, a side panel helps against driving rain.

You can match the shelter with a privacy screen or a stretch of garden fencing in the same colour for a tidy result. For more examples of steel shelters, see the bike shelter range at hekwerkwebshop.nl.

Shared courtyards and VvEs

Many Amsterdam housing blocks enclose a shared inner courtyard where dozens of residents leave their bikes in a jumble. A steel shelter for the whole courtyard brings order and keeps everything dry. These spaces are usually managed by the VvE, the homeowners’ association, so it helps if one person requests the quote on behalf of everyone. Our guide to working with your VvE covers the same approach.

Courtyards are often only reachable through a stairwell, a gate or a narrow alley. We design with that in mind, so every part fits through. If you want to secure the courtyard entrance as well, take a look at our made-to-measure gates.

Bike parking for businesses

Companies in Amsterdam need somewhere for staff and visitors to park their bikes too. Think of an office on the Zuidas, premises in Sloterdijk or a workshop in Noord. A covered, made-to-measure steel shelter keeps bikes dry and makes the entrance look cared for. The quote is free and without obligation for businesses as well.

We do not advise on permits. Whether a roofed structure in your garden or at your premises needs approval is a question for the City of Amsterdam, especially for listed buildings or protected areas.

Quote, delivery and installation

We would like to build more bike shelters, so do get in touch. Send rough measurements of the space, a few photos and an idea of what needs to fit. We aim to reply with an indicative quote within one or two working days. If you want us to install, we come to measure and send a final quote with a drawing. The price depends on size, design, roof, finish, fixing method, access and whether we install.

Standard lead time is 6 to 8 weeks after approval, or 8 to 10 weeks from July to September. We are in Amsterdam every day with our own drivers and fitters, so a garden behind a narrow house is no problem. Prefer to assemble it yourself? We deliver free of charge and with care. Can it take a cargo bike?

Yes, just mention it when you enquire so we allow for the length and width of the cargo bike.

Do I need a permit for a covered bike shelter?

We do not advise on permits. Please check with the City of Amsterdam what applies in your situation.
