The classic Amsterdam garden railing
Walk through Oud-Zuid, the Rivierenbuurt or the leafy streets of Buitenveldert and you will see plenty of them: low steel railings in front of 1930s homes, taller fences with spear tops around larger houses, and open railings along gardens that back onto the water. They mark a boundary without hiding the house.
That is the kind of fence we make. Each one is drawn for your plot, so it follows the line of your garden wall, the width of your path and the height that suits the building. Most front garden railings end up somewhere between 80 and 100 cm, while fences around detached houses are often taller.

Choosing the details
An ornamental fence is built from a few elements. How you combine them decides whether the result looks plain and modern or traditional.
- Bars and rails. Vertical bars, round or square, held between a top and bottom rail. Closer spacing gives a denser look and keeps a dog in.
- Finials. Spear points, fleur-de-lis or simple balls welded onto the bars, often with the bars running through the top rail.
- Scrolls. Curls between the rails or in an arch above a gate. Lovely in moderation; a 1930s house usually looks better with a simple line.
- Posts and post caps. Square posts with a cap that finishes the fence and keeps rain out of the post.
Not sure what you want? Send us a photo of your house and of a fence you like, and we will suggest a design that fits.

Steel only, galvanised and powder coated
We do not offer aluminium ornamental fencing. Everything here is steel: heavier, sturdier and easy to weld into exactly the shape you need. Each section is hot-dip galvanised against rust and then powder coated. Galvanising and coating are the only steps we outsource. The rest happens in our own workshops in Urk and Emmeloord.
You can pick any RAL colour. Black and anthracite are popular, but many Amsterdam clients go for canal green (grachtengroen), a colour our coating partner keeps as a standard shade. Read more in our article on canal green.
If your fence needs an entrance, we make a matching pedestrian gate or double driveway gate with the same bars and finials. See our made-to-measure gates.
Installation in a busy city
We are in Amsterdam every day, delivering and installing with our own drivers and fitters rather than a parcel service. Narrow pavements, cars parked in front of the house and tight loading times are part of the job, and we plan for them.
Posts usually go into the ground. If there is already a low brick wall, we can fix the fence on top with base plates, and next to the house we often anchor it to the wall. You always get the production drawing, so you know in advance exactly what will be installed.
Living in a listed building or a protected conservation area? Check with the City of Amsterdam (gemeente) what applies to your address. We do not give permit advice, but our drawing is useful for any application.

What affects the price
We do not publish prices, because no two fences are the same. The cost depends on length and height, the design (bars, finials, scrolls, caps), the finish, the fixing method, how easy the spot is to reach and whether we install it or you do it yourself. Prefer to fit it yourself? We deliver it to your door for free, with no minimum order.
We can also repair an existing fence, even one made by someone else, though repair often costs more than a new one.
How to get a quote
Quotes are free and without obligation. Send rough measurements and a few photos, and you will receive an indicative quote. If that works for you and you want us to install, we come to measure up and send a final quote with drawing. We aim to reply within 1-2 working days.
Lead time is normally 6-8 weeks from approval to installation, and 8-10 weeks from July to September. Request yours through our quote form or call or WhatsApp +31 36 84 54 240. We also work across the wider region, see our service area. For the full product range, take a look at the ornamental fencing range at Hekwerkwebshop.nl.
Frequently asked questions
Is this real wrought iron?
It is welded steel in a wrought iron style. It looks the part, and galvanising plus powder coating protects it far better than traditional iron.
Do you make aluminium ornamental fences?
No. Our ornamental fencing is always steel.
Do I need a permit?
That depends on your address, especially for listed buildings and conservation areas. Please check with the City of Amsterdam.
Can you deliver only?
Yes. Many clients install the fence themselves. Delivery by our own drivers is free.
