Zaandam sits just north-west of Amsterdam, a short drive through the Coen tunnel. We deliver and install in Amsterdam every working day, so the Zaan region (Zaandam, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Assendelft) is a natural part of our routes. That keeps planning simple and means the people who turn up know the area.

Hekwerk Amsterdam is run by Hekwerkwebshop.nl, which started in early 2013. We make every fence and railing ourselves, from start to finish, in two workshops in Urk and one in Emmeloord. Only galvanising and powder coating are done by specialist partners. Delivery and installation are handled by our own staff, not a parcel service.

Wooden Zaan houses, modern flats and new estates

The area has a strong character of its own. Along the river you will see the traditional wooden Zaan houses, painted green with white trim. The rebuilt town centre, known as Inverdan, is full of new apartments with balconies and roof terraces. Around it are post-war neighbourhoods with blocks of flats, and further west, in Assendelft, the large new estate of Saendelft with mostly family homes and gardens.

Requests from the area tend to follow those building types:

• Apartments in the centre: clean balcony railings or glass balustrades.
• Older and traditional houses: decorative front garden fencing and steel gates.
• Post-war flats: replacing worn balcony railings, often arranged through the VvE (the homeowners’ association).
• New-build homes: garden boundaries, gates and privacy screens.

What fits a Zaandam home

For balconies we usually start with our made-to-measure balcony railings. The spindle models A01 to A07 are sturdy and low-maintenance, while the S02 slatted design gives you more privacy. Facing the water and keen to keep the view? A glass balustrade with steel or stainless steel posts is the obvious route.

At ground level, steel decorative fencing suits both a Zaan house and a 1930s home, and can be matched with a garden or driveway gate. Green works well against many local facades, but any RAL colour is possible. All steel is galvanised and/or powder coated, which matters in a damp, riverside climate.

Everything is custom-made, and you always receive the production drawing.

Delivery and fitting

Our own drivers bring the work to your door, free of charge and with no minimum order. You can choose to install it yourself, which plenty of customers do, or have our fitters do the job. On upper floors the parts go up the stairwell, in the lift or over the balcony, depending on the building.

Allow 6 to 8 weeks from approval to installation, or 8 to 10 weeks from July to September.

If you want us to install, we come to measure up and send a final quote with a drawing. We only measure up for jobs we also install.
