Single or double swing gate

Most of the gates we make are swing gates: hinged on a post and opening like a door. There are two main types.

• Single pedestrian gate. For a garden path, a back alley entrance or a front garden. Usually 100 to 120 cm wide, enough for a bike or a wheelie bin.
• Double gate. Two leaves that together give a wide opening, for a driveway, a yard or a business premises.

Sliding gates are possible too, for example when there is no room for a leaf to swing. In the city, though, most people choose a swing gate because it is simpler and needs less space along the fence line. If your path slopes up, the gate may need to open outwards or hang a little higher. We check that when we measure up.

A gate is only as good as its hardware. We fit hinges and locks by Locinox, a brand made for outdoor gates that copes with rain, frost and heavy use.

• Adjustable hinges, so the gate still hangs straight years later.
• Cylinder locks, so you can lock the gate with a key.
• Gate closers that pull the gate shut by themselves, useful with children or a dog.
• Drop bolts and stops for double gates, so the fixed leaf stays put.

Gate automation is technically possible as well, though few of our city clients need it.

Matching your fence

We build the gate in the same style as the fence beside it. A classic railing with spear tops gets a gate with the same bars and finials; a plain modern fence gets a gate that follows the same clean line. See ornamental fencing and fencing for the fences themselves.

Need a gate in an existing fence? We measure the opening and the posts and make the gate to fit. Sometimes new posts are the better choice, because an old fence post is not always strong enough to carry a gate. Everything is steel, hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated in any RAL colour, including our canal green.

Hanging a gate in the city

Gate posts work harder than fence posts. They carry the weight of the leaf and take a beating every day, so they need to be heavier and set deeper. That is why we prefer to install gates ourselves. Our own fitters are in Amsterdam daily and are used to tight pavements, gardens you can only reach through the house, and gates that open onto a narrow alley.

A terraced house in Nieuw-West or Noord often needs a single gate between two walls at the back. A detached house in Buitenveldert or a commercial site in Westpoort more often needs a wide double gate. Either way you receive the production drawing before we build. Prefer to fit it yourself? What determines the price

We do not list prices. The cost depends on width and height, single or double leaf, the infill (open bars, finials, scrolls or a closed panel), the hardware, the finish, the posts and ground conditions, access to the site, and whether we install. We can also repair an old gate that drags or no longer closes, though a new gate with proper hardware often works out better over time.

Quotes are free and without obligation. Send us the width of the opening, the height you have in mind and a few photos. You will get an indicative quote first. If you want us to install, we come to measure up and send a final quote with drawing. We aim to respond within 1-2 working days.
