Railings, balustrades and fencing in Amsterdam

In the city every day

Hekwerk Amsterdam is run by Hekwerkwebshop.nl, a Dutch metalwork company that has been making railings and fencing to measure since 2013. Amsterdam is one of the places we visit most. Our drivers and installers are in the city daily, delivering and fitting, so you are not waiting for a van that only comes this way once a month.

Everything we supply is built from scratch in our own workshops: two in Urk and one in Emmeloord. Only the galvanising and powder coating are done by a specialist partner. Delivery is handled by our own people too, not a parcel service, and it is free with no minimum order. If you want an independent view, customers rate us 9.3 out of 10 across 300 reviews on WebwinkelKeur, the Dutch trust mark for online businesses.

What we make

Most of our work is steel: balustrades and balcony railings, glass balustrades, Juliet balconies, roof terrace railings, decorative fencing, gates and stair handrails. Every job is made to measure, so the railing is built around your balcony, staircase or garden rather than the other way round, and it comes with a production drawing that you receive as well, so you can see exactly what will be made. Below you will find our product groups, each with its own page on designs, materials and practical points for Amsterdam.

From enquiry to installation

Ordering a bespoke railing is fairly straightforward. This is how it works:

  1. Send your enquiry. A few photos and rough measurements are enough to start. Mention the style and colour you have in mind and if you would like us to install it.
  2. Indicative quote. We aim to reply within 1-2 working days with an initial price. It is free and you are under no obligation.
  3. Survey and drawing. If the figure works for you and we are fitting it, we come out to measure up. You then get a final quote with a drawing.
  4. Production and fitting. Once you approve, we build it. Allow 6-8 weeks from approval to installation, or 8-10 weeks from July to September.

Prefer to fit it yourself? We can simply deliver. In that case we do not survey, so you work from your own measurements. Request a quote here.

We know the city

Amsterdam has its own challenges. A canal house in the centre has very different fixing points from an Amsterdam School walk-up in Zuid or West. On a top-floor flat in de Pijp, the Juliet balcony usually faces the street above a narrow pavement. New builds on IJburg, the Zuidas or in Noord tend to have tidier dimensions, but the VvE (the homeowners’ association) often has a say in how things look.

We know the practical side as well: unloading in tight streets, carrying a balustrade up a steep Dutch staircase, or lifting it over the balcony when the stairwell is too narrow. On roof terraces along the IJ, wind plays a part in choosing the design and fixings. If your building is listed or in a protected conservation area, check with the municipality what is allowed. We do not give advice on permits.

Materials and finishes

What we make in house is steel, either galvanised, powder coated or both. Galvanising protects against rust and the powder coat adds colour. You can choose any RAL colour, and our coating partner also offers grachtengroen: the deep canal green you see on doors and railings all over the old city.

For balcony railings and roof terrace balustrades, aluminium is another option. We buy it in; it is light and needs little maintenance. Garden and decorative fencing is steel only. Glass balustrades come with steel or stainless steel posts and profiles, for example slim steel posts (G10) or brushed stainless steel with glass clamps (G02).

Beyond the ring road

We are not limited to the area inside the A10. Our team drives through the region every day, so Amstelveen, Diemen, Zaandam and Haarlem are just as easy for us. Delivery and installation work the same way: it makes no difference if the address is on a canal or in a new estate just outside the city, along the Amstel or by the Zaan. Take a look at our service area for more detail. Below is a selection of towns around Amsterdam.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a made-to-measure railing take?

Usually 6-8 weeks from approval to installation. From July to September it is busier, so allow 8-10 weeks.

Can I install it myself?

Yes, plenty of customers do. We deliver free of charge with our own drivers. We only survey when we also install, so you would work from your own measurements.

Is the quote free?

Yes, quotes are free and without obligation. You first get an indicative price based on photos and rough measurements, normally within 1-2 working days.

Do you come to measure up?

If we are installing, yes: we survey the site and then send a final quote with a drawing. For delivery only, we do not measure up.

What affects the price?

Mainly the length, height, design and finish. The fixing method, how easy the spot is to reach and if you want us to install it also play a part.

Tell us what you have in mind

Send a few photos and rough measurements. You will have an indication within one or two working days, free of charge.
