Canal green, anthracite or black: choosing a railing colour in Amsterdam
The colour of a railing does a lot of the work in how it looks from the street. Walk through Amsterdam and three colours keep appearing: canal green, anthracite and black. Here is how to choose, and what the finishes mean.

What you see on Amsterdam streets
Along the canals of the Centrum and the Jordaan, dark green and black dominate: front doors, bollards and the little railings in front of basement flats. In De Pijp, Oud-West and Oost, dark tones are common on Juliet balconies (Frans balkon) and balcony railings. On IJburg, at the Zuidas and in Buiksloterham, anthracite is everywhere, matching modern window frames.
There is no single right answer. What helps is to look at what is already on your facade and in your street: window frames, front door, gutters and the neighbours’ railings.

Canal green, the Amsterdam choice
Canal green (grachtengroen) is the deep green you see all over the old city. Our coating partner offers it as a colour of its own, alongside the full RAL range, so it is a set colour rather than an approximation.
It suits older buildings with green or white timber frames, a Juliet balcony facing the street, or classic ornamental fencing in front of a garden or basement. If you are replacing a railing on a canal house, our article on canal house balcony railings is worth a read. For listed buildings or a protected cityscape, ask the municipality whether colour plays a role.

Black and anthracite: RAL 9005 and RAL 7016
Black, RAL 9005, is timeless. It recedes, suits nearly any facade and lets the shape of the railing speak, which works well on ornamental designs.
Anthracite, RAL 7016, is a little softer than black and matches the grey frames on much of the city’s new-build housing. On clean-lined designs such as the S01 flat bar fence or the A01 to A07 baluster models, it looks calm and modern.
- Black: classic, ornamental, period homes.
- Anthracite: modern, new-build, straight lines.
- Canal green: typically Amsterdam, canal houses, basements.
Galvanised and powder coated: why both
The railings we make ourselves are steel, built in our own workshops in Urk and Emmeloord. They then go to the galvaniser and the powder coater, the only steps we outsource.
Galvanising protects the steel against rust. Powder coating adds the colour and a second protective layer. Together they keep a railing looking good in Amsterdam’s damp, windy climate close to the water. You can also choose galvanised only, which gives a grey, industrial look.

Textured or smooth
Alongside the colour you choose a texture. A smooth finish looks sleek with a slight sheen and gives the colour depth. A textured finish has a fine grain that hides small marks and fingerprints and looks more matt.
Textured is popular for ornamental fencing, gates and handrails that get touched a lot. Smooth often suits a minimal balcony railing on a modern facade. If you are unsure, ask us when you request your quote.
Colour and design together
Colour and style work together. An ornamental fence with spear tops in canal green looks quite different from the same fence in anthracite. On a simple baluster railing the colour stands out more, because there is less shape to look at.
Think about the background too. Against dark brickwork a dark railing looks calm, while black stands out clearly against a light rendered wall. On a garden gate or driveway gate you use every day, a textured finish is pleasant to the touch. With several items, say a front balcony railing and a garden fence, one colour throughout keeps things consistent.
Choosing in practice
A colour on screen looks different outdoors. Find railings near you in the colour you are considering and look at them on a grey day and in bright sun.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RAL number for canal green?
Canal green is a colour of its own at our coating partner, separate from the RAL range. You simply order it as canal green.
What is the difference between black and anthracite?
Black is RAL 9005 and looks classic. Anthracite is RAL 7016, slightly softer, and pairs well with modern window frames.
Do I need both galvanising and powder coating?
For outdoor use in Amsterdam it is the best combination: galvanising stops rust and the powder coat adds colour and extra protection.
