Railing delivery and installation in central Amsterdam: how it works

Delivering a railing to central Amsterdam takes more than a van and an address. Narrow streets, busy pavements and steep staircases turn every job into a small logistics plan. This is how we handle it.

Railing delivery and installation in central Amsterdam: how it works

It starts with the drawing

A smooth installation day is planned weeks in advance. Everything we make is made to measure, and every railing gets a production drawing, which you receive too. At that stage we already work out how the railing will get into the building. That avoids a three-metre section stuck on a quarter turn of a Dutch staircase.

Standard lead time is 6 to 8 weeks from approval to installation, or 8 to 10 weeks between July and September. Once the parts are ready, we agree a date with you.

Our own drivers and fitters, in the city every day

We build everything ourselves in our workshops, two in Urk and one in Emmeloord. Only the galvanising and powder coating are done by partners. Delivery and installation are done by our own drivers and fitters, never a parcel service, so the railing arrives undamaged. Transport is free, with no minimum order.

We deliver and install in Amsterdam every day. Our team knows the canals of the Centrum, the tight streets of the Jordaan and De Pijp, the 1930s walk-up flats in West and the new-build blocks on IJburg and at the Zuidas. Read more about us.

Narrow streets, loading and unloading

In the centre you can rarely park at the door and unload at leisure. Streets are narrow, cyclists keep coming and some pavements are barely a metre wide. Our drivers choose a suitable time and spot for loading and unloading, and work quickly so the street is not blocked longer than needed.

We do not advise on rules for loading zones or using public space. If you are unsure about your address, check with the municipality (gemeente).

Up the stairs, or in sections

Amsterdam stairs are steep, narrow and often twisting. A balcony railing still has to get past them. The options:

  • Sections sized for the stairs, so each part fits through the stairwell.
  • Made in parts that are joined on site for a long run.
  • Over the balcony, lifting material up from outside, for example using the hoisting beam on a canal house.

With canal houses this nearly always comes up. Our guide to replacing a canal house balcony railing covers the rest.

What you can arrange yourself

Some of the preparation is down to you, and it makes the day much easier:

  • Tell your neighbours, especially in a shared stairwell.
  • Check with the VvE (the homeowners’ association) when the work affects the facade, roof or shared areas. See railings and your VvE.
  • Clear the route: bikes in the hallway, plants on the balcony, boxes on the stairs.
  • Stay reachable by phone so the drivers can call when they are close.

Delivery only is fine too

Plenty of customers install the railing themselves. In that case our drivers drop it off and you fit it, and you also take the measurements. We only measure on site when we install, because we are then responsible for the fit.

If we do install, we measure up after the indicative quote and send a final quote with drawing. On the day, our fitters bring everything needed to fix the railing. Browse our made-to-measure balustrades to see what is possible.

Frequently asked questions

What if the railing does not fit up my stairs?

We plan for that when drawing. The railing is made in sections or lifted up over the balcony.

Do you arrange a loading spot?

Our drivers pick a suitable time and place. We do not advise on rules for public space, so check with the municipality if in doubt.

Can I order delivery only?

Yes, many customers install themselves. You take the measurements and we deliver free of charge with our own drivers.

Tell us what you have in mind

Send a few photos and rough measurements. You will have an indication within one or two working days, free of charge.
