Balcony privacy screens in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam your neighbour’s balcony is rarely more than an arm’s length away. A balcony privacy screen gives you back your own outdoor space without blocking the daylight. We build them in steel, to measure, with frosted or clear glass.

Balcony privacy screens in Amsterdam

Why so many Amsterdam balconies need one

Space is tight in this city, and outdoor space even more so. Post-war gallery flats in Nieuw-West, Noord and Zuidoost have long rows of balconies side by side. New developments on IJburg, Zeeburgereiland, in the Houthavens and Buiksloterham often separate balconies with nothing more than a thin divider. Adjoining roof terraces on top of upper floor flats in De Pijp and Oud-West are just as common.

A screen between two outdoor spaces turns a shared view into a private corner. It also cuts the wind noticeably, which matters on higher floors and anywhere near the water.

Four designs: PS01 to PS04

  • PS01 straight: a rectangular screen, the most popular choice between two balconies.
  • PS02 angled corner: the top corner is cut off at an angle, available from 1 metre wide. Good if you want to keep some view at the front.
  • PS03: 50×50 mm steel posts with frosted glass in between, with a clear steel frame.
  • PS04: 50×50 mm box sections with glass held in glass clamps, for a lighter look.

Each design can have a frosted infill that blocks the view but lets light through, or a clear infill if wind is the main issue. Screens combine well with new or existing balcony railings or a glass balustrade.

Fixing: base plates or wall brackets

A privacy screen catches a lot of wind, so the fixing matters as much as the screen. We either mount it on base plates on the balcony floor or roof terrace, or fix it to the building with wall brackets so the floor or roofing stays untouched. We decide which is suitable when we measure.

If the screen sits on the boundary with your neighbours or on a shared part of the building, agree it with them and with your VvE (homeowners’ association) first. Our article on railings and the VvE explains what to consider. We do not advise on permits; check with the City of Amsterdam.

Finish and colour

We make the steel frames ourselves in our workshops in Urk and Emmeloord. They are galvanised and then powder coated in any RAL colour, so they last for years even on a windy balcony by the IJ. Anthracite and black suit most new builds and gallery flats. For a building with green window frames, grachtengroen (our coating partner’s own canal green) is an option. In a VvE it often helps if everyone chooses the same design and colour, and we can make and install several screens in one go.

Delivered and installed by our own team

Getting a glass screen up to the fifth floor of a gallery flat takes some planning. We deliver with our own drivers and install with our own fitters, never a courier. We are in Amsterdam every day, so parking by a flat in Nieuw-West or unloading in a narrow street in Oost is routine. Glass and frame arrive in parts that fit the lift or stairwell. Delivery only is also possible, free of charge with no minimum order, and you always receive the production drawing. We also work outside the city, for example in Diemen.

Price and requesting a quote

We do not list starting prices. The price depends on size, design, frosted or clear glass, colour, fixing, access and whether we install. Send us a few photos and rough measurements for a free, no-obligation indicative quote. If you want us to install, we come to measure and send a final quote with drawing. We aim to reply within one or two working days. Lead time is 6 to 8 weeks, or 8 to 10 weeks from July to September.

Frequently asked questions

Does a privacy screen still let light through?

Yes. Frosted glass blocks the view but not the daylight. Clear glass is mainly for wind protection.

Do you have to drill into my balcony floor?

Not necessarily. A screen can stand on base plates or be fixed to the wall with brackets. We check what is possible on site.

Can you supply screens for several balconies in one building?

Yes. We make them in the same design and colour, which keeps the facade looking calm and consistent.

What is the difference between PS03 and PS04?

PS03 uses 50×50 mm steel posts with frosted glass. PS04 uses 50×50 mm box sections with glass in clamps and looks slightly lighter.
