Fencing in Amsterdam
Need fence installation in Amsterdam that can take bikes leaning on it, footballs flying into it and wind off the IJ? Our go-to is heavy-duty twin-wire mesh fencing, supplied to measure and installed by our own fitters.

Twin-wire mesh, explained
In Dutch it is called dubbelstaafmat: welded steel panels with vertical wires held between pairs of horizontal wires. We use the 8/6/8 version, meaning two horizontal 8 mm wires with a 6 mm vertical wire between them. That makes the panel rigid, even at greater heights.
The panels hang on 60 mm round posts, set about 70 cm into the ground. Amsterdam soil is often soft and wet, and new-build plots and waterside gardens catch a lot of wind, so that depth matters. Finish options are hot-dip galvanised only, or galvanised and powder coated. Green and anthracite are the usual choices, but any RAL colour is possible.

Where it works best
- Back gardens bordering a ditch, path or green strip, common in Nieuw-West and Noord.
- Business premises in Westpoort, Sloterdijk or Zuidoost that need a secure, see-through boundary.
- Schools and childcare, where a tall fence without sharp edges is a must.
- Sports grounds that need height to keep balls in.
- Allotment gardens (volkstuinen) that want protection without losing the green feel.
Want more privacy? Mesh fencing can be combined with screens, see privacy screens.

When another product is the better fit
Mesh fencing is practical, not always pretty. On the street side of a 1930s house, a townhouse in Oud-Zuid or a detached villa, a steel bar railing with finials usually suits the street far better. Have a look at ornamental fencing. If you need an opening for a car or bikes, add a gate, see custom gates. And for a balcony, roof terrace or stairwell you need a balustrade rather than a fence, which is a different product with a minimum height of 100 cm. Not sure? Send a photo and we will tell you honestly what works.
How installation works
We build all our fencing in our own workshops in Urk and Emmeloord and only outsource galvanising and coating. Our own drivers and fitters are in Amsterdam every day.
On site, we first set the posts in a straight line at the right height, then hang the panels. On sloping ground we step the fence to follow the terrain. On hard surfaces such as paving or a car park, posts can go on base plates. Access counts in the city: a garden you can only reach through the house or a narrow passage takes more carrying, and we plan for it. You always receive the production drawing.
Many clients install mesh fencing themselves. In that case we deliver panels, posts and fixings with our own van, free of charge and with no minimum order.

What drives the price
We do not quote starting prices. Cost depends on total length and height, the number of corners and level changes, the finish, the fixing method, any gates, access to the site, and whether we install. We can also repair existing fencing, even if someone else supplied it, though repair is often more expensive than new.

Quotes are free and without obligation. Tell us the length, height and number of corners, ideally with photos or a sketch. You get an indicative quote first; if we install, we come to measure up and send a final quote with drawing. We usually reply within 1-2 working days. Lead time is 6-8 weeks after approval, or 8-10 weeks from July to September.

Frequently asked questions
What does 8/6/8 mean?
Two horizontal 8 mm wires with a 6 mm vertical wire between them. It gives a stiff, strong panel.
How deep do the posts go?
About 70 cm into the ground, so the fence stays straight on soft soil and in strong wind.
Can I install it myself?
Yes, plenty of clients do. We deliver everything free of charge with our own drivers.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
We do not give permit advice. Check with the City of Amsterdam what applies to your address.
Tell us what you have in mind
Send a few photos and rough measurements. You will have an indication within one or two working days, free of charge.
