Local know-how, our own team

Hekwerk Amsterdam is part of Hekwerkwebshop.nl. We make everything ourselves in two workshops in Urk and one in Emmeloord, outsourcing only galvanising and powder coating. Delivery and installation are done by our own people, not a parcel service or subcontractor.

Working here daily means we know the city’s quirks: narrow pavements, limited loading time, steep canal house staircases, 1920s walk-up flats where a balustrade goes up the stairwell or over the balcony, and new-build blocks where the VvE (homeowners’ association) has to approve first.

Amsterdam district by district

Centrum

Canal houses, narrow streets and many listed buildings. Typical jobs are a Juliet balcony for a tall window, a stair rail, or a roof terrace balustrade. For listed buildings or the protected cityscape, check with the City of Amsterdam first.

West

Oud-West, De Baarsjes, Bos en Lommer and the Houthavens. Amsterdam School walk-up flats with small balconies, and new waterfront flats in the Houthavens. Balcony railings, Juliet balconies and roof terrace balustrades are most common.

Nieuw-West

Osdorp, Slotervaart, Geuzenveld and Slotermeer. Post-war gallery flats and family homes with gardens, so alongside balcony railings we often fit mesh fencing along ditches and garden gates at the back.

Zuid

Oud-Zuid, De Pijp, the Rivierenbuurt, Buitenveldert and the Zuidas. Townhouses and 1930s homes with front gardens, upper-floor flats in De Pijp, villas in Buitenveldert and high-rise at the Zuidas. Ornamental railings, gates, glass balustrades and Juliet balconies all feature.

Oost, IJburg and Zeeburgereiland

The Indische Buurt, Watergraafsmeer and the Eastern Docklands, plus new-build on IJburg and Zeeburgereiland. Wind off the water is a real factor, so solid balustrades and well-fixed glass are key. Front garden railings are popular in the Watergraafsmeer.

Noord

From the garden villages of Nieuwendam and Buiksloot to new-build in Buiksloterham and Overhoeks. Garden fences and gates in the older parts; roof terraces, balconies and privacy screens in the new ones.

Zuidoost

High-rise in the Bijlmer, offices and businesses around Amstel III and the Arena, and residential areas such as Gein and Holendrecht. Both balcony railings and perimeter fencing for businesses, schools and sports grounds.

Westpoort and Sloterdijk

The port and business district. Mesh fencing with wide double gates is standard here, sometimes with a staff bike shelter.
